printmaking

My mono prints and etchings have evolved into narrative scenes of abstracted objects, plants and insects interacting at close range. They are made with oil based inks and printed on 100 % rag paper through the use of plexi glass plates, copper plates, photo sensitive polymer plates (solar etching) and lithography techniques; and a printing press.

Currently, my process begins with making sketches of ideas and imagery to choose from. I then collage these images into the final composition and enlarge or reduce the results. This piece becomes the matrix for laying color and a general guide for design. The resulting print, whether I’m etching or making a mono print, is composed of 1 - 12 plates holding 1 - 3 colors each. ( In some cases the mono prints can include up to 30 colors ).

Although the beginning of my process is quite controlled and systematic, the inking and printing can be spontaneous and intuitive, resulting in images that vary greatly from the initial concept. I enjoy this balance and the element of surprise and hope it contributes to the spirit of the work.

Stage Sets

The content of this "stage set" series encompasses my family history in theatre, my love of storytelling and children's toys, how live things relate to one another and my general obsession with color, texture and design.

My current body of work is a compilation of influences, associations, experiences, and opinions.

To express this mixture of elements I've chosen two process oriented mediums, clay and print making - which combine the systematic and structural sides of making with the ability to be spontaneous and intuitive - allowing the act of fabrication to be as much a part of the final outcome as the work's content.

I enjoy arranging these components and seeing how they contribute to the character of the work.
